Mentoring has always been a great way to manage your career and life journey. Mentoring gives long term benefit and also needs to be evaluated from time to time, as the need of a specific specialist changes in accordance to the life journey. Mentoring can also augment your career growth -confidence and job outcomes.

However a mentoring program also needs to be well planned to get the best results. This can be in context to learning outcomes. Unlike Coaching Mentoring works as more prescriptive and advisory based. These are professionals who specialise on domains and give guidance based on their expertise and experience.

6 Essential aspects of a mentoring program which helps an organisation build their programs from the ground up are

1. Thinking with the end in mind

Clarity on the end purpose and goals in the framework is critical for the success of the mentoring journey. This also decides the team -the thought process and the tools involved. If the goal is to increase productivity and performance then you need to identify what competencies and the mentors who would lead the project. Similarly if you want to promise a longterm career to the employees you need to organise planned workshops by mentors who can showcase the same and also provide one on one support.

Thus aspects to explore in launching any mentoring initiative(for better alignment and strategy) are following:

  • Outcomes you would like to accomplish
  • Problems to solve
  • Environment change that is going to be experienced post mentoring project
  • Number specifications in terms of revenue -rewards or even recognitions for organisation and also the employees

2. Mentors who are excited to support

Mentors work better when they are sourced internally, within the organisation as this enables the mentee to understand what works for the organisations. This also a nice way of moulding leaders to comply with the internal culture and norms. However the mentor needs to be as excited as the mentee to support this journey; or else this could backfire.

External mentors, can also be a good choice, provided they understand the organisational landscape and have a transparent view of the same. 

3. Mentors are best aligned when its aligned to the competence that one is trying to develop

If one is working on one’s people skills one needs to get a mentor who has mastered it or does it with accuracy 90% of the time. Thus when mentorship is aligned to the competence or a role that you are developing yourself for, it definitely works better.Remember that effective matching is about more than just skills, interests, and job descriptions. The key is to develop a well-rounded picture of each mentor and mentee and make a match based on the goals of the employee receiving mentorship.  

One can always have a dialogue and chemistry session to have the final mapping of mentor with mentee. This needs to be mutually agreed upon or else it might be a challenge in terms of seeing the commitment in the path and the process.

4. Setting the Goals as per the organisational purpose, vision & share the progress

Unless the entire process is given an audience with the tracking process, the results may not be visible. Thus it’s important for the mentors and the mentees to commit to certain timelines and share the progress with their stakeholders from time to time. Also highlighting any challenges which needs senior leadership intervention to get sorted.

This mentoring journey needs to be prioritized by the participants to get maximum results and also to facilitate the organisation goals accomplishment.

5. Measure the outcomes and share with organisation for others to be excited about participation in the program

After your mentoring program launches, one needs to highlight and showcase the outcomes to the stakeholders and also others involved for optimum engagement. This includes helping your mentees track their goals, collecting feedback from participants, and looking at the overall business impact of the program. As we mentioned before, there are a lot of biases that can trickle into your mentoring programs. This can be hinderance to your ongoing mentoring plans and also building experts -leaders and visionaries in the process.

Proud moment for India… Every Indian has tears of joy in their eyes for the son of India -Neeraj Chopra! There is celebration across the country!! We have finally got a star athlete out of the 1 billion Indians, who has realised our dream. The last gold medal which we were reminded of was of Abhinav Bindra for the shooting in Olympics. He performed magnificently and bagged a Gold medal for the country. This year making history Neeraj Chopra won Gold Medal on the Day 15 of the Tokyo Olympics. The Haryana boy has created history for India and made us proud, and shown us that dedication -determination and diehard willpower can make anything possible no matter which country or background you belong to. After 121 years, a new chapter for India in both athletics and sports, has begun. Chopra is the second Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics, after Abhinav Bindra won it in 10m air rifle at the 2008 Beijing Games. In spite of his elbow injury he has truly lived upto the expectations of the nation and his team.

It’s a great surprise to all of us, that India the land of talents is not raining medals …Yet how often do we really prioritise sports whether as a family -community -nation… When a child is born all we are worried about is admission in school, the school likewise is also focused on strict adherence to academic syllabus and grades. Very few schools encourage sports and the kind of rigour it requires to produce a SPORTS STAR!! As sports requires hours of toil for mastery, and only the best are remembered.

It’s high time we we start encouraging the children, when we see their aptitude in sports! In fact playing for senior state championship can be equivalent to a graduation and playing for the country as Masters and such equivalent accomplishments and recognitions. So that the short shelf life of a sports person, is not taken as a disadvantage and they are engaged in roles beyond their active career. When at least 10% of our population takes sports and politics more seriously as a career and not just good to do…we too can scale up our medal rankings and also emerge as a super power! After all globally we all are flesh and blood people who need the right encouragement and support to make things happen….

This year today and tomorrow fall under the auspicious time of Guru Purnima. The day is dedicated to all teachers, mentors, instructors, coaches, and all who guide us through life in many ways towards our goals and purpose of life. The day is a full moon day of Ashada month. It is also believed that on this Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon in Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh. According to the Gregorian calendar, this is a full moon day.
The word GURU is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Gu’ meaning darkness or ignorance and ‘Ru’ meaning ‘removal’. Hence Guru is believed to be the dispeller of darkness and ignorance for our lives.


Bruce lee’s Golden Words in Finding The Truth With Support of the Teacher, is also something indicating that with right guidance and direction, one can always accomplish more.
Since, time immemorial India has been the land of Gurus visited by millions for enlightenment and purpose in life! In fact, it’s time we have all realized that there is a Guru in each one of us, that we need to encourage to reach out to people we can support -guide, or facilitate. Likewise, we also need to be open to learning at all times from every person who touches our life. Life becomes stagnant and meaningless only when we cease to learn and also engage in gossip or criticism, rather than finding what we can learn from people around us.

  4. Everything starts small – Ashish’s first voice-over graduated him to his next role as Tipu and then his role in a movie, all because he embraced the first small role that came his way. Rome was not built in a day and may not be built at times, but it’s always worth putting small efforts to enjoy the experience; which can be the beginning of something phenomenal in your life.
  5. Failures are actions that didn’t yield visible results – 95% of life is not the way you want it, yet the 5% is still your best game that can give you HAPPINESS -HARMONY -HEALTH and a means to experience your true potential.
  6. Nothing is Permanent -Everything has a shelf life, thus being able to transition from one phase to another in a graceful way is the true mark of success. Thus being able to move on and re-invent one’s opportunities and explore the best version of oneself every day is what can facilitate everyday accomplishment.

A Rakesh Omprakash Mehra & Farhan Akhtar movie, portrays journey of Aziz Ali aka Ajju (Farhan Akhtar) as a small-time extortionist -local goon to becoming TOOFAN a boxing sensation, Maharastra state champion and eventually national champion.

Though the story has many parallels with Rocky, Sultan, Mary Kom and Chakde, the tough love of coach and doctor transforming a street fighter, is a good blend to watch. Also highlighting the stereo types of community, religious and other misunderstandings that can doom relationships.

The best lessons from the movie are :

  1. Be Aware of your skills – Often people around us and also our own instincts give us hints of our own potentials and skills. Thus being aware supports the first step to being aware of choices. In the movie the protagonist understands his ability in strength and energy by virtue of inputs from many people around him and finally makes the choice to pursue boxing.
  2. Take the right meaning of feedback & inputs -When people put you down take it as a blow that is going to hone your abilities to where it needs to be, to be in your next level of growth rather than complaining over it. Ali gets feedback and consistent inputs from his coach which is shapes effectively in his boxing skills.
  3. Make Love your Strength to build yourself – Till the time Ali used his love as strength he was on the right track, however no sooner he used it as a weakness he was caught in the wrong foot.
  4. A dedicated coach can support your Success – Coach played by Paresh Rawal is a very effective portrayal of a Guru’s role in mastery. In fact Coach’s dedication can only be earned through complete surrender. Ali’s mastery of boxing was possible only because of his faith in the coach.
  5. When you manipulate others you bring your own FALL -The climax of the film also exhibits a situation where Ali’s old rival tries to manipulate and loses his own face in the circuit.
  6. Bringing sorrow to others sometimes acts as a karmic effect on life -In spite of winning his love, Ali goes through painful separation with first love -boxing and eventually his only love- spouse.
